Cortland OKs CHIP partnership with 3 other communities

CORTLAND — City council agreed Monday to team with Girard, Hubbard and Niles in applying for financial aid through the state Community Housing Impact and Preservation program.

Mayor Deidre Petrosky said that grant would help low-to-moderate income households get brought up to code by financing various maintenance tasks, such as repainting or adding new windows to a house. The program is through the Ohio Development Services Agency.

The mayor said residents of the city who use the program would have to repay the funds either while owning or prior to selling their homes.

Petrosky said this is the second grant cycle in which the four cities have partnered when joining the program. The city of Cortland is allocated $250,000 worth of funds from the grant. The mayor said that whatever funds Cortland, or the other three cities, do not use during the program year, that money then becomes available for the other cities in the partnership to use the following year.

In other business, council:

• Passed an ordinance authorizing the service department to purchase a 2023 Ford F-550 4-by-4 cab and chassis dump truck with options from Mark Thomas Ford for a total cost not to exceed $56,765. The truck will replace the city's current vehicle, a 2007 Ford F-350;

• Passed an ordinance establishing the wage rate of $50 per hour for part-time city employee Jacob Rougeaux, who will help with city zoning maps;

• Passed an ordinance authorizing the purchase and installation of a metal roof from Detweiler's Metal Roofing for the city's service garage in Willow Park for an amount not to exceed $22,400;

• Passed an emergency ordinance authorizing service director Kimberly Blasco to purchase 48 cellular water / sewer meters, supporting equipment and a service plan from MetronFarnier Smart Water Meters and Systems for $375 per meter;

• Heard second readings of ordinances for various lot changes throughout the city;

• Heard first reading of an ordinance authorizing police Chief David Morris to purchase a 2024 Ford Police Interceptor sport utility vehicle as well as the needed accessories and their installment for a price not to exceed $68,000;

• Heard first reading of an ordinance authorizing Blasco to purchase a GapVax G7 flush from Safety Company LLC doing business as MTech for a total price not to exceed $85,336;

• Passed a resolution to petition the Trumbull County Board of Commissioners for conformity of the borders of Cortland and Bazetta within the municipal boundaries.
